RJ Williams FYZICAL Franchisee Success StoryMy name is Sanjeev Joseph. I moved to Bradenton, FL from Manhattan in 2010 after meeting the love of my life. Moving from NYC was a difficult decision, but I knew I would only do it if I were going to make a name for myself and change peoples’ lives in a very significant way. I landed a job in a very reputable outpatient clinic and quickly moved up the ranks to Clinic Director. After a few years, I decided it was time to blaze my own trail. I researched all possibilities of starting a business: bootstrapping a self-funded startup; seeking venture capital; starting a partnership; going with an established franchise. In researching all options, I was introduced to FYZICAL. I agreed with the business model and ultimately decided it was the best option.

Initially, I had a negative connotation with franchises (Domino’s, McDonald’s, Apex PT) because my belief was the owner’s autonomy was lost (fear). I was skeptical that the interests of the franchisees would often come last, with the company interests being put first (fear). I felt I had the skills necessary to develop the practice on my own, through my own talents…without any outside assistance (ego). I wanted complete control of all decisions, and ability to keep all revenue (ego). Fear and ego was a factor in my initial thoughts.

Introduction to FYZICAL

When I attended PT Revolution, I realized 5 things:

  1. The business model put the owner first, seeing that the success of the practice meant success of the franchise as a whole.
  2. FYZICAL had a better understanding of economy, physical therapy industry, trends in healthcare and business management than I did.
  3. FYZICAL has a better marketing plan for practices than I could come up with on my own.
  4. FYZICAL’s values and beliefs of putting the patient first, offering growth opportunities for employees and ethical practices aligned with my own, in addition to their branding expertise.
  5. I will be more profitable by going with FYZICAL than trying to go on my own. I have a different path in my career/business/life because of the ability to plan and execute better than before.

After the information was processed, the fear and ego is less likely to influence my decision.

Start Up Practice

FINANCIAL SNAPSHOT

  • 2015: Our revenue was $2,500
  • 2016: Our revenue was $362K with a profitability: 14%
  • 2017 (Budgeted): This year we have a projected growth of 41% with a budgeted revenue of$505K with a 19% profitability
  • Budgeted Revenue & Profitability moving forward: In years 2018 and 2019, we will continue to have per center revenue between 30-40%. 2019 will involve another franchise location, so total revenue growth is projected at 138%. In 2020, we will sustain growth at 10%. By 2021, we expect to be at $2.38M in revenue, with profitability north of 20%.

There was an uncertainty in the early days about how to manage a business. I opened my practice in October of 2015, as FYZICAL’s first start-up center. For me, FYZICAL provides the management,marketing andclinical guidance needed to achieve optimal growth. Not just that, FYZICAL has helped me effectively incorporate innovative programs into a profitable model. I can say that I am now a seasoned business owner, not just a seasoned clinician. FYZICAL has taught me that strategic planning is the medicine for fear of the unknown. Now I can grow without limitation.

Today, we are a profitable and steadily growing practice with unlimited opportunity ahead. In just one year of operations, we are running at 50% capacity. I have hired two clinical FTEs and looking to fill 2 more positions. I recently hired another FTE in administration as well. We are providing a bigger tax basis to help the economy and our local community. Most importantly, I am serving more members of the community with expanded programs and services.

I am also fortunate to be amid some seasoned FYZICAL franchisees who have supported me in the growth process. Keefe Fugleberg & Lisa Titterud at FYZICAL Sarasota Main Street and Frank Dieckman & Melanie Scott at FYZICAL Bradenton have supported me through various successful marketing programs we are employing. We have formed a marketing alliance to reach and serve a much larger footprint together than we could individually. This is the definition of pooled resources!

You must understand, aligning with FYZICAL is a big decision that will change the course of your life. You must objectively look at the information provided to you. Don’t let fear and ego guide your decisions otherwise. You will end up being stagnant in your life, career and relationships. Have a growth mindset when exploring FYZICAL, so you can truly understand what you will gain as a franchisee. Be excited about the opportunity you are getting into, not the pitfalls that may come if you take the risk. Be a Risk Manager, not a Risk Taker. Weigh the pros and cons of all options (going with FYZICAL, partnering with someone, going solo, etc.). Run the numbers, work on a preliminary business plan and be prepared to ask questions. The more informed you are, the better decisions you will make. For me, FYZICAL worked as planned because I weighed all the options…and all roads led back to FYZICAL. Be ready to improve your career and life.
